The Facts About Abusive Head Trauma

Preventing Abusive Head Trauma

At Prevent Child Abuse America, we believe that all children and families deserve to live a purposeful and happy life with hope for the future. One of the most crucial steps in achieving this vision is preventing Abusive Head Trauma (AHT), also known as Shaken Baby Syndrome. This devastating form of child abuse occurs when an infant or young child is shaken violently, leading to severe and often irreversible consequences.

The Importance of Education

With Children under the age of 1 experiencing the highest rates of abuse and neglect, AHT remains one of the leading causes of child abuse fatalities in the U.S. Tragically, many misconceptions surrounding AHT—especially the dangerous claims that deny its reality—threaten the progress we have made in protecting vulnerable children. At PCA America, we are committed to dispelling these myths and ensuring that the truth about AHT is heard loud and clear.

Annually, it is estimated that between 600 and 1,400 cases of AHT occur in the United States. However, the actual number may be significantly higher due to challenges in accurately tracking and reporting this form of abuse. AHT stands as one of the leading causes of both death and long-term disability among infants and toddlers who experience abuse, underscoring the urgent need for widespread education and prevention efforts.

By understanding the frequency and risk factors associated with AHT, we can better address the conditions that lead to such tragedies and strengthen our ability to protect vulnerable children.

What is Abusive Head Trauma (AHT)?

Abusive Head Trauma is a serious and often deadly form of child abuse that occurs when a caregiver shakes an infant or young child violently. The resulting trauma can cause brain damage, blindness, and even death. The emotional and physical toll on children and their families is unimaginable, making prevention and education key components in protecting young lives.

Unfortunately, a growing number of individuals are attempting to discredit Shaken Baby Syndrome as “junk science,” putting more children at risk. These claims are both misguided and dangerous. At PCA America, we continue to advocate for evidence-based practices and fight back against misinformation.

How We Support Families to Prevent Abusive Head Trauma

Preventing AHT requires a multifaceted approach. Our focus includes supporting families and caregivers before stress reaches the point of crisis. Research shows that providing families with concrete support, like paid family leave and refundable child tax credits, can alleviate stress and help reduce the risk of child abuse. Programs like Healthy Families America (HFA), our evidence-based home visiting initiative, are vital in offering new parents and caregivers the guidance, resources, and emotional support they need to navigate the challenges of caregiving.
