The President's Fiscal Year 2027 Budget proposes investments that affect the health, safety, and well-being of children and families across the United States. These choices reflect our nation's priorities. As the President and CEO of Prevent Child Abuse America, I believe it is essential that critical investments to support families and build a future where communities can flourish are reflected.
Investments prioritizing programs that improve the health and well-being of children and support families in their earliest years have the power to create safer, more nurturing environments where children can thrive. We are encouraged by the inclusion of provisions that address improved nutrition, access to healthy foods, and the prevention of chronic disease as these recognize that prevention begins long before child maltreatment occurs.
However, we are deeply concerned by portions of the budget that would reduce or diminish essential supports for children and families at the very moment they need them most. Cuts to programs such as Community-Based Child Abuse Prevention supports, child sexual abuse prevention and child maltreatment funding, and programs that address poverty and promote self-sufficiency risk undermining the stability and well-being of families already facing significant challenges.
Children must be at the heart of our national budget priorities. Investments in prevention reduce future social costs and strengthen the economic and social fabric of our communities. Ensuring children and families are supported through programs that protect their safety, nurture their potential, and support the communities in which they live, work and play, ensures the success of our entire nation.
Congress must act to protect and strengthen funding that prioritizes the health, safety, and opportunity of children and families. This proposal serves as a timely reminder, especially during National Child Abuse Prevention Month, that keeping families at the center of policy decisions is critical to supporting the well-being of children and families. Preventing child abuse and neglect requires sustained commitment and resources that reflect the value we place on every child's potential
Together, we must ensure that our federal budget mirrors our nation's shared belief: children and families are our most important asset, and investing in them is investing in a brighter future for all.
