As a national organization committed to the health and well-being of children and families, Prevent Child Abuse America is deeply concerned about the consequences of a government shutdown. While we understand that long-term goals—such as expanding access to healthcare and ensuring fiscal responsibility—require difficult decisions and careful negotiations, we cannot overlook the immediate impact and practical consequences these disruptions are likely to have on our nation's children and families.
Government shutdowns interrupt vital programs that families rely on—such as nutrition assistance, housing support, early childhood programs, and access to healthcare. When these supports are faced with delays, reduced capacity, or temporary closures, it can lead to increased stress in homes, disruptions in care, and negative impacts on children's well-being and safety.
It is essential that the needs of children and families remain a priority during funding negotiations. We need all elected leaders to work together to prioritize the basic needs of families, especially during times of uncertainty. Ensuring the continuity of essential services is paramount, even as broader reforms are debated.
At Prevent Child Abuse America, we believe in a world where all children and families live a purposeful and happy life with hope for the future. That future depends on stable resources, investments in prevention, and policies that reflect the needs of real families—especially during times of crisis.
